Why It's Okay To Take A Break

Why It's Okay To Take A Break

Let me go ahead and start with the most controversial thing ever, I am over this trend of "self care" and calling out of work for a mental health "day." It's not that I don't believe in self care or mental health, I just don't enjoy that's it has become this "trending topic" as if you should be applauded for taking care of yourself for one day. This should be a lifestyle. I don't mean calling out of work every day, but you should be able to manage work or school without having to give yourself just a "day" to binge.

Self care should be a lifestyle change that you make so that you don't burn out because of an everyday occurrence (i.e. work and school). Yes, things can be stressful and yes life can knock us down sometimes, but that doesn't mean it's okay to be in an unhealthy mindset 24/7 until one day you implode.

Why It's Okay To Take A Break

You should be able to find ways to give yourself breaks throughout your day. It's vital for not only your mental clarity but also for your body. It's okay to take advantage of your breaks at work. I don't understand people who say they never take a lunch break. You're working 8+ hours shifts you need to nourish your body and step away from your e-mail every now and then. Not only that, but most companies take 30-minutes out of your paycheck for a lunch break anyways. Log off for thirty minutes and take a breather.

It's okay to move. Desk jobs or physically demanding jobs require a lot from your body. You should get up and stretch every now and then. Get the blood flowing and move around. Drink water too!! Think about it, if you drink a lot of water that your body needs throughout the day then you'll have to pee a lot and those walks to the bathroom = you getting up and moving.

Call your mom. Or a friend. Or whoever. Talk to someone about your day. Vent, get it out and talk about your frustrations. It's not good when you keep everything inside because it just builds up and then you go into your day with hatred in your heart and the weight of the world on your shoulders.

I am a big advocate for a "get your life together day." It's a day where you do take the proper day off, using PTO, to get all your adulting stuff done. Doctor's appointments, clean the apartment, grocery shopping. Sometimes a two-day weekend just isn't enough.

Lastly, self care is an ongoing thing. You should be celebrating the little victories in your everyday life. You should treat yourself in every which way. For me, there's nothing like getting into a hot bubble bath when I've had a day. I also love taking my dog, Oliver, for a long walk. I'm stuck in an office all day long so getting some fresh air is nice and refreshing.

It's okay to take a break. It's okay to give yourself space from everything going on. It's okay to need time to yourself, but make this a lifestyle change. It's not just a "day" break. You should constantly be giving yourself breaks and working on a better version of you.
